Walton on Thames Community Fridge Opens

After a lot of hard work and a few sleepless nights, the Community Fridge is open.  In our first week we received 90kg of surplus food from the COOP and Waitrose in Hersham and we thank them for supporting us and our community. The food we receive is perfectly fit to eat, is within date, but is surplus to requirements for the retailers. We accept these donations of food and make them available to the people in our community for free.

Our aim is to reduce food waste. We are not working to resolve food poverty and insecurity, though this is undoubtedly a “hidden” benefit of our work. There are other amazing organisations out there fulfilling that role. We simply hate to see good food being thrown out, when it could be on someone’s plate.

There are no judgements or prerequisites. Simply turn up with your own bags, select the food you would like from the fridge and larder, weigh it out (helps us measure impact), leave enough for others, and off you go.

This week we had lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, eggs, bread and yogurts.

The fridge is stocked every Mondays and Thursday morning, so make sure to pop in to see what’s available. Whilst on site you may wish to take a book from our book swap, and add some food packaging to our small item recycling bins, or even enjoy a walk around the Community Garden.

We hope to see you at the Hub soon.
